World War I began in 1914 and many Europeans thought it would be a quick war.  However, the war raged on until 1918 and was the bloodiest war the world had ever seen.  The United States tried to avoid the conflict by adopting a policy of neautrality but they were unable to avoid the conflict and entered on the side of the Allies in 1917.  The United States helped the Allies defeat the Central Powers and the war ended in 1918.
