During World War I, Germany caused tons of damage to other countries, but they were the clear losers of the war. Germany crashed after a blockade by the British navy and later on, were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles. It declared that Germany and all its allies are responsible for loss and damage in the war. Germany had to sign over territories to Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. As a result Kaiser William II was forced out of throne and politicians ruled as the Social Democrats. They declared Germany a republic and that Germany would be run by Parliament. Due to the damage Germany made, they had to pay $300 million dollars to the other Allied Powers. Germany lost about 2 million men in the war and these men were the core of the work base. Communists also wanted to overthrow the government. This weakened Germany’s economy tremendously.
The aftermath of WWI also brought despair to its citizens and civilians. There was an extreme shortage of food and farmers were short of workers due to draft and war fatalities. They were only producing 50% of the milk that they did before the war and they ran out of potatoes so the Germans only alternative was turnips. They also suffered from diseases and sicknesses spreading. Nearly 750,000 Germans died of the flu and starvation. There was also a lot of angry civilians which brought violence. Soldiers returned with weapons and this could cause harm if they used it the wrong way if they were disloyal to the government. WWI brought Germany economic disaster, loss of man power, loss of respect toward government, armed and angry soldiers, and angry civilians.
