Battle of Argonne Forest

From September 26th through November 11th 1918 the Battle of Argonne Forest to took place in France- Western Front, along the Meuse River. The Germans spent the past four years fortifying the area and the U.S. came in to help the French and British. The short battle captured approximately 15,000 prisoners. The battle was successful because the British and the French went to German railroad lines that supplied the German army in France and shut them down. 117,000 American soldiers died in this battle. 70,000 French soldiers were killed in this battle. 100,000 Germans were killed and this resulted in the treaty of Versailles.

This was the final battle of World War I. This was the biggest operation and victory for the AEF. Only about two hundred of the 77th Division survived the battle. This was a big battle for America because they helped France end the German occupation. The Germans held Argonne Forest for the entire duration of the war until their defeat in the Battle of Argonne Forest.
