League of Nations

The League of Nations, created from the Treaty of Versailles, was an international organization where international disputes could be resolved with talks instead of violence.  The League of Nations was created when the covenant of the League of Nations, ratified by 42 nations, takes effect.  Woodrow Wilson pushed for the creation of the League of Nations but the United was not a member, neither was Germany or Russia.  The League's authority wasn't seriously challenged until a series of events exposed it as ineffectual.  In 1946 the League of Nations officially dissolved with the establishment of the United Nations.

The League of Nations was unsuccessful because the League did not have any real power to back up proclamations.  With the outbreak of World War II the League of Nations was seen as a total failure since its main goal was to prevent another war.  The League did have some success and managed to prevent several smaller wars throughout its existence.  The League of Nations was also a big step for humanity because it was one of the world's first humanitarian organizations.  The League of Nations helped give people a sense of security and eased international tensions.
