Battle of Belleau

The Battle of Belleau Wood was a battle between the U.S's 4th Marine Brigade and elements of three German divisions. It took place at Aisne- Marne Sector in the northwest part of the town Chateau – Thierry in France. This battle was very confusing. None of the soldiers ever really quite knew where they were.  The three German divisions include the 197th, 87th and 28th German division groups.  The U.S. General of the time was General Pershing. The battle ended with 1,811 deaths and 7,966 people went missing or were injured in combat. 1,600 Germans were captured.

The Battle of Belleau is important to understand in the scope of WW1 because it showed that the U.S was committed and would do anything to win. This was the first battle where the AEF (American Expeditionary Force) experienced the heavy casualties associated with the Great War. The U.S Marine cops were determined and dedicated and victorious.  The Battle of Belleau Wood was the last major German offensive of the war and it was unsuccessful.
